Quick Reminders About Your Laser Vision Correction Procedure

Before going in for your procedure:

  • You should not use contact lenses for about 7 days for soft lenses, and 14 days for hard lenses. This is determined by Dr. Dello Russo on an individual basis.
  • It is not recommended to drink alcohol 48 hours before surgery.
  • It is not recommended to use make-up 24 hours before surgery (mascara, eye shadow, powder).
  • You should thoroughly wash your face, especially your eyes on the day of surgery.
  • You should thoroughly wash your hair before your procedure
  • Perfumes should be avoided on the day of surgery

On the day of surgery is best to keep both your eyes closed and rest or sleep the first few hours. Swimming is not recommended during the first week, unless you are using watertight goggles. Also, avoid rubbing your eyes, and subjecting them to shocks (shakes) in the first few days.

During the first 24 hours after laser treatment, most patients will experience a sensation in the eye or some discomfort. Typically, patients note improvement of vision for 3-7 days or sooner after surgery. In the following period, you should make several visits to Dr. Dello Russo. Visual acuity may fluctuate for several weeks and usually stabilizes within 1-6 months depending on the method of correction.

After the laser vision correction you need to comply with the following requirements:

  • You should follow all instructions of medical personnel and the surgeon.
  • You will need to stay in the clinic for a few hours after surgery (usually about 2)
  • During the entire period of time after leaving the center prior to the first medical examination on the next day you should avoid touching your eyes.
  • For 2 weeks, you should avoid any exposure to direct light and limit driving at night. For 3 months after laser vision correction, you should not be exposed to UV lights.
  • You need to avoid drinking alcohol while taking antibiotics (an antibiotic effect is sharply reduced when consuming alcohol).
  • Wear protective bandage on the first night (or nap) after the operation.
  • You should not go swimming or use any eye makeup.
  • You will be prescriped soft contact lenses on the operated eye for 3-4 days after the Lasik correction.
  • You can go back to your normal activities after your procedure, but you should not wash your hair or your face (anywhere close to your eyes) for 3 days to avoid any infections.
  • You must use the the prescribed antibiotic/natural tear eye drops once every 2 hours during the week.

If you feel any unfamiliar sensations or decreased vision, you should immediately call or go to the Dello Russo Laser Vision Center. Dr. Dello Russo will discuss any other limitations or things that you should avoid after your procedure. Most of our patients were very satisfied with the results and have not heard any complaints after undergoing surgery.
